College View Elementary Public School
This 200-square-foot garden is at College View Elementary Public School (1225 College Road, Council Bluffs, Iowa) school grounds which are public property but please be respectful of safety concerns and visit after school hours. This garden is used for educational purposes as an outdoor classroom by the school and especially by the 5th grade. In 2021, select students of the 5th grade planted this garden and in 2002 a select number of that graduating 5th-grade class expanded upon it. The garden installations were the take-action portion of the student’s think globally, act locally final project. They have and are making a difference in their world, one plant at a time.
Some of the unique plants found in this planting include but are not limited to, Prairie smoke (Geum triflorum), Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), Snow on the mountain (Euphorbia marginata), Side oats (Bouteloua curtipendula). Each year the list of partners grows as the children actively seek out donations to help with installation costs. Currently, the list of sponsors includes Pottawattamie Conservation, PATH, Milkweed Matters, PF, The Knights of Columbus, and 5th-grade student and parent support.
